4 Pittsburgh Steelers Practice Report - 2/4/2011

The guessing game with two key Pittsburgh Steelers for Super Bowl XLV is over: Center Maurkice Pouncey and defensive end Aaron Smith were both declared out for the game by coach Mike Tomlin Friday afternoon.Smith, out since Oct. 24 with a torn triceps, never got close to playing again here in the final days before the Super Bowl matchup with Green Bay. But the Steelers held out faint hope that the rookie keystone to their offensive line, Pouncey, might be ready with concentrated rehab. Pouncey didn't appear at practice for the third straight day Friday, rehabbing inside the TCU trainers' room, and Tomlin said as his team left the practice: "He's out."Asked after the Steelers' two-hour Friday practice inside the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility on the snow-swept TCU campus how Pouncey's absence will affect the Steelers' offensive gameplan, Tomlin said: "It won't. Obviously he's a quality player, and how it affects the game, no one knows. But as far as what we do, we have a plan, and that won't change."Talk about stepping into a pressurized situation: Undrafted center Doug Legursky from Marshall will make his first NFL start at center in the Super Bowl—and he'll be facing 2009 first-round nose tackle B.J. Raji of the Packers to boot. Legursky has made four previous starts at guard for the Steelers, but never in the middle of the line, at such a key spot making line calls Hockey Jersey and handling the exchanges with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. There were times in the three days of Steeler practices here at TCU that Legursky looked like a misfit in the land of the giants, at 6-1 and 315. On average, his four starting linemates are four inches taller and 19 pounds heavier than Legursky."The NFL is made up of lots of players like him—guys who somehow got an opportunity and seized it," said Tomlin. "We're completely confident that he will seize this opportunity and play well. That's why we're not changing what we do."As has been the case for the past three months, second-year defensive end Ziggy Hood will man the left end spot for Smith Sunday against Green Bay.Friday's workout was the third straight this week inside the TCU practice facility for the Steelers, and the third straight in shells, sweats and helmets. The Steelers, not surprisingly, didn't wear shoulder pads and didn't tackle all week, befitting a team trying to stay healthy and fresh after six months of practices and games.Tomlin had crowd noise piped in for the first time this week as the Steelers went through their normal Friday routine of goal-line, short-yardage and two-minute plays. The team seemed loose, as it has all week. When Troy Polamalu picked off a Charlie Batch pass near the goal line, fellow safety Ryan Clark chanted: "MVP! MVP! MVP!""We've had a very good practice week, very normal," said Tomlin. "We're lucky to Calgary Flames jersey have guys who just love football and love one another. It's a special group."The Steelers are welcoming team families into the practice facility Saturday for their final practice of the week, a light walk-through Saturday at 10 a.m. On Saturday afternoon, the players and coaches will part with their families and go to a secret hotel for their last night before the game, the same practice the Steelers followed before the championship game two years ago against Arizona.NFL 2010 Conference Championships ResultsGreen Bay Packers 21, CHICAGO BEARS 14PITTSBURGH STEELERS 24, NY Jets 19NFL 2010 Divisional Weekend Playoff ResultsPITTSBURGH 31, Baltimore 24CHICAGO 34, Seattle 24Green Bay 48, ATLANTA 21New York Jets 28, NEW ENGLAND 21NFL 2010 Wildcard Weekend Playoff ResultsSEATTLE 41, New Orleans 36Baltimore 30, KANSAS CITY 7New York Jets 17, INDIANAPOLIS 16Green Bay 21, PHILADELPHIA 16RSS Rodgers That! 3 Greek life could potentially be scrutinized due to resolution

Title IX, best known for its impact on high school and collegiate athletics, also has a direct effect on single-sex organizations like the Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts, as well as fraternities and sororities. As a campus with 17 percent of the undergraduate population involved in Greek life, Carnegie Mellon is largely affected by this law.The law states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance....”Despite the existence of Title IX, single-sex organizations like fraternities and sororities have remained intact over the years. This is due to a clause under Title IX that states, “This section shall not apply to membership practices ... of a social fraternity or social sorority which is exempt from taxation under section 501(a) of Title 26, the active membership of which consists primarily of students in attendance at an institution of higher education.”The exclusion of social fraternities and sororities from Title IX has allowed Greek life to grow on its own terms on many collegiate campuses, but not without controversy.“In the past, there have NHL Jerseybeen challenges faced by these organizations due to men and women wanting to join groups that are specified toward the opposite sex,” said Brittani Grant, president of Carnegie Mellon’s Panhellenic Council and a junior civil and environmental engineering major.“So the issue that is currently going toward Congress is whether there is still a need for single-sex organizations as well as whether current groups exempt from Title IX are conducting themselves in a manner that shows them as single-sex organizations,” Grant said. Many colleges are finding instances of extreme intermingling between social fraternities and sororities, such as the adoption of sorority women as honorary members of Interfraternity Council (IFC) fraternities. This intermingling, which often includes these “little sisters” having voting rights during recruitment, is argued to negate the purpose of a single-sex organization. To address this rising issue, the National Panhellenic Council (NPC) passed a resolution last October stating that Panhellenic sororities could no longer participate in fraternity recruitment. “If sororities are questioned about why they should remain single-sex organizations, this NPC resolution will show that we are taking steps to preserve the standards of the organizations,” said Monica Bebie, coordinator of Greek life at Carnegie Mellon.By refraining from participation in fraternity recruitment, sorority women not only hope to Canucks jersey distinguish themselves as strictly single-sex organizations, but also hope to promote values-based recruitment.“Fraternities and sororities will always work together to support one another in their individual endeavors, but NPC wanted to make sure that new members are joining fraternities for the right reasons like the goals and values of the fraternity, not the girls that they would get to meet from being a part of the organization,” Grant said. “Although this has not been much of an issue for the Greek community on Carnegie Mellon’s campus, it is still necessary for Carnegie Mellon’s Panhellenic Council to put a resolution in place to Vancouver Canucks jersey address the specific issues regarding women and men’s recruitment.”Some of the 1,045 of 6,020 undergraduates in fraternities and sororities at Carnegie Mellon are wondering how this resolution will directly affect them.Grant, who is working with others in the community to put a plan of action in place, said, “I don’t have specifics of what [our campus’s] resolution will look like at the moment, but I can guarantee that something will be put in place by the end of the semester and therefore will have an effect on Panhellenic women’s involvement in fraternity recruitment in the fall.”The resolution could mean anything from sorority women not being able to go to fraternity houses during recruitment to refraining from liking a fraternity’s rush on Facebook. One thing is certain, however: Greek life is determined to remain as single-sex organizations.“Historically, Greek life has been about groups coming together saying ‘we need a social outlet....’ Men started fraternities and then women wanted that opportunity too,” Bebie said. “Keeping fraternities and sororities same-sex benefits everyone because women can talk about issues as they relate to women and vice versa with men. We [Greek life] are a huge, huge value add to campus.”Especially at Carnegie Mellon, social fraternities and sororities offer a community for strengthening gender relationships.

Home Articles, Recent PostsIf Women Were In Charge (Article)Submitted by admin on August 4, 2010 12:00 amNo Comment Hockey Jersey by Jennifer PalumboWhen considering what life would be like if women were in charge, there are immediately the cliché comments like leaving the toilet seats down permanently or eliminating sports, or making shopping count as cardio or that the White House would be pink. This… quite frankly… is colossally stupid. If women ruled the world, yes, there would be things you would expect, but there would also be very intelligent tweaks to the way things already are. Here are just a few examples as I see it:POLITICSThe stereotype is women who are in charge wouldn’t be good at war but women, in case you didn’t know, can be total bitches. We’d not only declare war but we’d even give that country the silent treatment. “Oh, you KNOW what you did. If I have to tell you what treaty you broke, then you obviously didn’t care about it to begin with.” I’m telling you – the Cold War would have been years upon years of us going, “Fine! Whatever!”Women are natural multi-taskers. If we ruled the world, we could have cleaned up the oil spill with a Shout Wipe from our purse, a child under each arm, and still have enough sense to tell BP to use a sippy cup next time. And yes, we would treat Israel and Palestine like a mom whose two sons are fighting over a toy. “Look, if you cant share the West Bank then nobody gets it.? No, thats it, Im taking it away!”Just because she’s an intelligent, powerful woman, Hillary Clinton is called a bitch. So what about Mother Teresa? She had brains; she changed a nation, and was devoted to the sick and poor. What does that make her? A “See You Next Tuesday”?FEMINISMWe’ve gotten off track when it comes to Pittsburgh Penguins jerseywhat feminism means. Up until the end of the 1960s, women stayed home. In the 1970s, they abandoned staying home and pursued a career full time. In the 1980s and 1990s, women wanted to do both; have the career AND the family. Nowadays, they don’t want to do either. They want to have kids, pay a nanny to watch them, have their husband pay the bills so they can do whatever they want. Feminism used to be about getting equal rights. Now it’s about getting equal air time on your own reality show. Real women would change that.Yes, I am a feminist. I believe in equal rights and equal pay for women. I don’t however believe in burning my bra especially not while I’m still wearing it.Being a feminist also doesn’t automatically mean I’d want a woman in the White House. For example, I wouldn’t want to see Oprah as president. Why would I ask her to take a pay cut?SPORTSAll sports would not only include plot lines but the player’s statistics would list whether or not they are single. “Divorced. No children. Prefers redheads. In the off season he worked on his intimacy issues and added a knuckleball to his foreplay rotation.”POP CULTUREPeople would actually have to be talented be on television (Kardashians – I’m looking in your direction), Hugh Hefner would have to date someone his own age and cellulite would be considered a sign of sexiness.Actresses over fifty would play roles other than grandmothers and unattractive, overweight male actors would be cast against equally unattractive, overweight female actresses.BEAUTYTweezers, waxing and shaving would all be outlawed. That way, women Penguins jersey could use the exact time it took to become hairless to do something more meaningful… like creating a mirror that shows men what they ACTUALLY look like, and not what they think they look like. I’m just sayin’.Spanx, control top pantyhose and girdles would also be destroyed. That way, we could get the oxygen we need back in to our bloodstreams.Scales would no longer show you a number. They would have an audio response that would say something like, “You’re up a few pounds but who cares? You are a sexy, intelligent woman. You can stand on me anytime!”RELATIONSHIPSI’m not going to say men would have to listen more. Honestly, I’ve heard some of the things we go on about and I don’t think I could listen all day either. I suggest a compromise: They don’t have to listen to us if we don’t have to pretend we need them to open jars for us. Seriously – I can open my own damn jar. I was just being polite.BASICSPMS would be both a legitimate reason for a sick day and a legal defense in court.Vibrators would include cleaning attachments so you could multi-task. Hey – it’s a great idea.Women would design all theatres, public arenas, malls and restaurants so that there would be more bathrooms available… or at the very least, we’d get spa treatments while waiting on line.Maxipads, tampons, bras would all be covered under insurance as they are not, repeat, they are NOT luxury items.

Cops seize rental property of Bears TE Desmond Clark

Police in Lakeland, Fla., have seized a rental property that belongs to veteran Chicago Bears tight end Desmond Clark(notes).

According to Bay News 9, authorities in Polk County have taken control of a home at 901 North Tennessee Ave. that is known to have regular visits from drug dealers and prostitutes. Clark is a native of Lakeland.

“This has been a thorn in our side, I want to say, for at least, the very least, four years," officer Adrian Rodriguez told Bay News 9.

Per the report, Clark agreed with police that action needed to be taken, but nothing was NHL Jersey done. “Several drug arrests and seizures” occurred at the address last year. Clark, who will be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins, has been a stand-up member of the Bears. It's somewhat surprising he would be linked to such a problem home. There is a landlord involved that also failed to clean up the place as requested by authorities.

The home has been boarded up and Clark could have to forfeit the home for up to an entire year. Per the report, it is the second time in six years Lakeland has temporarily seized a home.

Brad Biggs covers the Bears for the Chicago TribuneKansas City Royals prospect Henry Montreal Canadiens jersey Barrera(notes) walked off the mound holding his right arm and wincing in pain during the team’s final intrasquad game.

The team said the preliminary diagnosis was Barrera has a strained right flexor, and he was scheduled to have an MRI. A club spokesman said it would be 24 to 48 hours before the full extent of the injury would be known.

Barrera, who has a 97 mph fastball, had reconstructive elbow surgery in 2009 and Canadiens jerseyworked just 33 innings last year in the minors. In 16 appearances for Double-A Northwest Arkansas, he struck out 25 in 25 innings while going 3-1 with a save, holding opponents to a .193 batting average.
